In the world of active transportation and advocacy, the tireless work of individuals often drives real change. This year, Bike Walk Kentucky is proud to honor three remarkable advocates whose passion and dedication have not only advanced our shared mission but also inspired countless others. Join us in celebrating Wanda Bertram, Keith Lovan, and Olivia “Liv” Birkenhauer as they receive the Advocate of the Year award.
Keith Lovan: Engineering a Safer Future for Cyclists and Pedestrians
Keith Lovan brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise as a professional engineer and the State Bicycle and Pedestrian Coordinator for the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet. With a background in civil engineering from the University of Kentucky, Keith has spent his career designing and implementing infrastructure that improves the safety and accessibility of non-motorized transportation across the state. His leadership in planning, design, and construction of pedestrian and bicycle facilities has been pivotal in enhancing the interconnectedness of Kentucky’s transportation network.
As a board member of Bike Walk Kentucky and a League Certified Instructor, Keith’s influence extends far beyond his engineering work. He actively promotes cycling safety and education, ensuring that more Kentuckians can confidently choose active transportation. His commitment to building safer streets, combined with his passion for biking and community service, makes Keith a model advocate for sustainable transportation.
Wanda Bertram: A Champion for Community and Cycling
Wanda Bertram’s career has had an immense impact, spanning strategic planning, organizational development, and government relations, all while maintaining a deep connection to her community. As a founding director of LexLinc and a dedicated advocate, Wanda’s work earned LexLinc the Martin Luther King Award for promoting equality in Lexington. She has held leadership roles in various nonprofits and community organizations, including serving on the boards of LexArts and the Rotary Club of Lexington. Wanda’s passion for cycling has made her a certified ride leader for the Bluegrass Cycling Club, where she guides and inspires others on their cycling journeys.
Beyond her professional and civic engagements, Wanda has been instrumental in incubating Bike Walk Kentucky, helping to build the organization into the statewide advocacy leader it is today. Her contributions are rooted in a love for the outdoors, including hiking, camping, and, of course, cycling. Wanda’s diverse expertise and unwavering commitment to creating more accessible, bike-friendly communities make her a truly deserving Advocate of the Year.
Olivia “Liv” Birkenhauer: Inspiring the Next Generation of Mountain Bikers
Liv Birkenhauer has turned her lifelong love of sports and fitness into a passionate career as a mountain biking instructor and coach. Since starting her cycling journey in 2000, Liv has transformed from a casual rider into a competitive endurance racer and cyclocross athlete. Today, she channels her expertise into coaching others, from beginners to seasoned cyclists, helping them discover the joy and challenge of mountain biking.
Certified by the International Mountain Bike Association and the Professional Mountain Bike Instructor Association, Liv’s qualifications speak to her dedication to the sport. Her true impact, however, comes from her ability to inspire riders of all ages to embrace the physical and mental benefits of cycling. As a coach and mentor, she fosters a supportive, fun environment that encourages growth, confidence, and connection with nature. Liv’s enthusiasm for mountain biking and her contributions to youth coaching make her a standout Advocate of the Year.
These three advocates exemplify what it means to create lasting change in our communities. Whether through policy, engineering, or coaching, Wanda, Keith, and Liv have each played a critical role in advancing Bike Walk Kentucky’s mission of making Kentucky a safer, more accessible place for cyclists and pedestrians. We are honored to celebrate their achievements and look forward to seeing their continued impact in the future.
