Riding Forward: Bike Walk KY’s 2023 Annual Report

A message from our President…

Welcome riders, walkers, and advocates! As we pedal into the future and stride towards safer more accessible streets, Bike Walk Kentucky proudly presents its 2023 Annual Report. This comprehensive overview showcases our efforts and the remarkable progress made in advancing biking and walking initiatives across the Bluegrass State.

In 2023 Bike Walk Kentucky engaged in its second fundraising campaign through the Good
Giving Challenge. Many thanks to our many donors for your support totaling over $8,500, enabling us to
continue building on this momentum.

While we look back, we must also look forward to 2024, especially toward the statewide Bike Walk
Summit, which will be held August 15 and 16 at Transylvania University in Lexington. The last summit in
2018 instigated the creation of Bike Walk Kentucky. We are excited that Bike Walk Kentucky is now able
to host the next statewide gathering of bike walk advocates.

The past year was an exciting one for Bike Walk Kentucky! It was a particularly significant year as the state rolled out the Complete Streets policy adopted in September 2022. The policy manual itself won a national award, as did Keith Lovan, Kentucky Bike Ped Coordinator and 2023 Vice President of Bike Walk Kentucky. You can read more about Complete Streets and other initiatives in the following 2023 annual report, including:

  • Kentucky Cycling Challenge
  • Share the Road Campaign
  • Campaign for a Bicycle-Friendly Kentucky
  • Paula Nye Grant and outreach initiatives

And we welcome our new board member, Katie Rowe (Louisville), who began her term in 2024.
We particularly thank our outgoing officers, all of whom have served in crucial roles during the Bike Walk
Kentucky’s formative first three years. As the first president of Bike Walk Kentucky, Mike Sewell
provided critical leadership. Likewise, Keith Lovan has been an invaluable Vice President. (Both Mike and
Keith served on the 2019 strategic planning team that paved the way for the formation of Bike Walk
Kentucky.) And Alice Harris has been indispensable as our treasurer and often secretary. Though
passing the leadership baton, we are grateful that all three will remain on the board of directors.

As an all-volunteer-run organization, we depend on and appreciate their dedication and leadership. And
we depend on your support! We welcome donations all year long. And another way to support us is to
order some Bike Walk Kentucky SWAG! Help spread the word by purchasing a t-shirt or sweatshirt
from our Online shop.

We look forward to seeing you out there biking and walking!

Sharon Brown, Bike Walk KY President
