Kentucky Cycling Challenge

Bike Walk Kentucky is excited to organize the 2024 Kentucky Cycling Challenge (KCC) again! This challenge promotes and supports cycling events across the Commonwealth.

Cruise through rolling hills, mountains, and plains like 1000s of other riders do each year pedaling the Bluegrass state. Geared toward seasoned riders, the Kentucky Cycling Challenge highlights five organized rides.

Redbud Ride – April 20, London

Horsey Hundred – May 24-26, Georgetown

Licking Valley Century – June 22, Alexandria

Rock the Crater – August 3, Middlesboro

Limestone Cycling Tour – September 7, Maysville

All participating rides are independent fundraisers. Each event features multiple route distances, making the events welcoming for a wide variety of cycling enthusiasts. Registering for the KCC does not register you for the race. You are required to register for participating KCC races using their registration process.

Campaign for a Bicycle Friendly Kentucky

Now you can earn official Bicycle Friendly Community or Bicycle Friendly Business designation from the League of American Bicyclists with help from Bike Walk Kentucky’s Campaign for a Bicycle Friendly Kentucky. Or if you already have a Bicycle Friendly designation, Bike Walk Kentucky can help you move up to the next level.

The League of American Bicyclists Bicycle Friendly America (BFA) program provides a roadmap, hands-on assistance and recognition for states, communities, universities and businesses. The BFA program is a tool to make bicycling a real transportation and recreation option for all people.

Currently, Kentucky has two Bicycle Friendly Communities, nine Bicycle Friendly Businesses and four Bicycle Friendly Universities. Kentucky ranks 43rd in the country.

To get you started, a board member with extensive experience in this field will:

  • Evaluate your community, university, or business
  • Make recommendations and help develop a plan for your community, university, or business
  • Provide templates and resources to complete the application
  • Assist in completing the application
  • Potentially assign another community or business to mentor you

Share the Road

Bike Walk Kentucky’s Share the Road campaign encourages more people to purchase a Share the Road
license plate.

These plates not only raise awareness for safe cycling, but also increase the pool of funds for Paula Nye Memorial Education Grants that go to Kentucky communities for education on bicycle and pedestrian
safety. The campaign also helps inform people about these grants and encourages them to apply for their communities.

The grants are awarded by the Kentucky Bicycle and Bikeway Commission, which are funded by the Share the Road license plates in Kentucky.

Please help distribute promotional materials, both printed and through websites and social media. Contact Sharon Brown at sbrown@transy.edu.
