The Summit is a statewide conference that will connect leaders and advocates to make our urban and rural communities safer, healthier, and more prosperous.
Promoting safe and healthy access for all
Thank you for being a part of the 2024 BWKY Summit!
The Bike Walk Kentucky Summit, held from August 14-16, 2024 at Transylvania University in Lexington, brought together a diverse group of advocates, city planners, public health officials, and community members committed to making Kentucky a safer place to bike and walk. Hosted by Bike Walk Kentucky, a state-wide initiative dedicated to promoting pedestrian and bicycle safety, the summit emphasized the importance of statewide collaboration to improve the quality of life for all Kentuckians.
Bike Walk Kentucky’s mission is rooted in the belief that every Kentuckian deserves safe, accessible, and connected pathways for biking and walking. The organization is focused on reducing the number of fatalities and injuries on Kentucky’s roads, which are alarmingly high. In 2023 alone, Kentucky reported over 1,500 pedestrian and bicyclist-related crashes, resulting in 80 fatalities and over 1,200 injuries. These numbers place Kentucky among the states with higher-than-average rates of pedestrian and cyclist incidents, underscoring the urgent need for continued advocacy and action.
The summit featured a robust lineup of keynote speakers, including Kentucky Secretary of Transportation Jim Gray, who highlighted the state’s ongoing efforts to improve infrastructure and safety measures. Secretary Gray’s attendance underscored the importance of state leadership in these initiatives. Additionally, the summit hosted a series of breakout sessions led by experts in urban planning, public health, and advocacy, providing attendees with valuable insights and strategies for driving change in their communities.
A special thanks is extended to Sharon Brown and her dedicated team, Katherine and Ashley, whose hard work and meticulous planning made the summit a resounding success. Their efforts ensured that the event was not only informative but also inspiring, leaving attendees motivated to continue their work toward safer streets across Kentucky.
As the 2024 summit concludes, excitement is already building for next year’s event. Attendees are encouraged to stay tuned for announcements about the next Bike Walk Kentucky Summit, which promises to build on this year’s momentum and continue the important work of making Kentucky a state where everyone can safely bike and walk.
